Bill is often asked why and how paintings are created and since we have talked about our products on the other pages, I thought it might be interesting to explore the ideas and process that create a painting by Bill.

Bill says:” My paintings are usually created from observation of something that interests or touches me deeply in some way and creates the desire to express it. I start all of my paintings with a sketch or a formal drawing, and not all of my drawings will become a painting. Some of them will be a classical drawing as shown in our drawing Gallery.

A drawing can be the foundation of the compositional structure for a painting. Some artists believe that the drawing represents 90% of the composition for the painting and at that point, it is only a matter of adding color to complete the process. I believe, this only applies, if the work is done in the traditional Renaissance Style, meaning the color range is generally muted.

Drawing is the thinking and probing arm of the artist. It certainly plays a strong creative roll in forming a painting. But when the structure is created, the application of color also defines forms, atmosphere and emotion of a painting. Color becomes a very important part of the composition. Color is taking the place of drawing, or in other words painting becomes drawing in color.

The understructure of very colorful paintings is often reformed do to the nature of the effect that colors have on each other. Colors talk and express emotions and will demand changes in the composition to obtain a harmonious and balanced outcome.”
